Student Resident Program Expectations and Qualifications

Expectations

  • Be enrolled in and maintain full time status in an approved fire protection or EMS degree program
  • Obtain Oregon EMT-B certification within 1 year of appointment
  • Obtain DPSST/NFPA Firefighter 1 certification within 1 year of appointment
  • Maintain Polk County Fire District No.1 residence quarters as primary physical residence
  • Serve a minimum 120-day probationary period
  • Be responsible for assigned duty shift except for illness, emergency or prearranged absences
  • Attend/participate in on/off duty Wednesday night fire drills and all drill & training events unless absence is prearranged
  • Respond to emergency calls both on and off duty
  • Participate in station tours, fire safety and EMS education classes, fire safety inspections and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM

18 years by beginning of residency

High school diploma, G.E.D. 
Or Certificate of Advanced Mastery

Possess/obtain and maintain a valid 
driver’s license insurable by the 
district’s insurance carrier

DESIRABLE

EMT Basic or higher

Firefighter I or higher

Pump Operator
